Getting My Music in Film & TV

So, my goal for this week (despite pregnancy making my brain operate at sub-par frequencies) has been to upload all my music onto <a href="http://www.MusicSupervisor.com" target="_new">www.MusicSupervisor.com. &nbsp; It's a cool web platform that let's you upload your music for free and then fill out a bunch of searchable information on each song ... everything from song mood to BPMs. &nbsp; Then, the idea is, the songs are made available to music and film industry executives for perusal. If they pick your song to be in their next movie, TV show, advertisement, etc., you get PAID!!!

Can you imagine? A musician. Getting paid. &nbsp;Yeah.

So anyway, I'm rather excited to see how it all turns out. &nbsp;Of course I'll let you know if any of my songs get placed in The Hobbit. Lol. &nbsp;Would that not be cool? &nbsp;Sadly, a lot of it comes down to who you know, and I do not know Peter Jackson, or the music supervisor (<a href="http://www.hot-house-music.com/" target="_new">Hot House) on the project. &nbsp; If anyone has any tips ... really for any film / show ... do drop me a line!

Seriously though, I can't help but dreaming about a song like The Promise being put in the credits of a LOTR film! *sigh* &nbsp;I guess there really isn't much romance in The Hobbit, but it would have been perfect for Arwen and Aragorn (o:

Saying Goodbye to my Dear Little Friend

God is good. When he created animals - the birds, the fish, the deer - he said, &quot; It is good.&quot; Today - on Good Friday - Mittens is going home. Back into the hands that formed her. Back to the brilliant mind that dreamed her into existence.

I am awed by her peace and bravery. She has serenity and joy in the face of what most humans perceive to be a terrifying black void of mystery; a gateway to another realm veiled in shadow and uncertainty. Yet this little cat is perfectly calm and content. It is nothing short of revealing. It is also humbling.

I am without any doubt that if a sinful person like myself has any hope of Heaven, then surely a sinless, guileless creature like Mittens - who reflects God's innocence and devotion with beautiful clarity and simplicity in every way - is guaranteed no less than assurance that she is loved by Love himself.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside our Father&rsquo;s care and knowledge. The grass withers and the flowers fade, but The Word, our God, endures forever.

We will see each other again, I know. But while we are apart, I will miss her dearly.

Once Upon A Time Book+Album Surprise!

With more and more people downloading digital music instead of buying physical CDs, it's pretty much become crazy for an artist to spend $1,500+ to press 1,000 compact discs. It's much more practical and effective to distribute music exclusively online.

However, I'm still a sucker for traditional albums, mainly because I love reading the lyrics, looking at the artwork, and perusing the credits. So, I came up with a really special album+book combo concept.

How would you like a full size, library quality book, containing lyrics, song inspirations, photos, exclusive unpublished poetry ... maybe even a short story or two ... with the music CD secured in a slip inside the front cover? It will be pretty enough to display on your coffee table, and I'm only planning to press 100 of them for starters as a sort of creative experiment to see if the concept catches on.

Already, photographers <a target="_new" href="http://laughlinphoto.com/">Doug and Joelyn Laughlin have captured a series of beautiful images at the fairy-tale home of Ed and Marie Bosarge, with its elegant grand piano, wall tapestries, sculptures, and amazing gardens, architecture, and art.

Once I get all my ducks in a row, I'll begin offering pre-orders of the book+album combo, and special sponsorship opportunities for listeners who want to get their photo ... maybe a brief editorial or poem ... in this exclusive collectable book+album bundle!

What do you think? Right now, I'm working on researching book printing services and prices. Meanwhile, I'd love to hear your ideas.

Much love,

Jennifer

PS: If you have experience in self-publishing books and know a good printer (or a really bad one I should avoid!), please let me know (o:

Music Videos, Photo Shoots, and Baby News

It is a cool humid Friday here in Houston, and I have opened all the windows to let the weather in. &nbsp; The kind of weather that makes everything sticky - and while that may sound unpleasant to some - I can't help but find the smell of distant rain intoxicating. &nbsp; Also, our neighbors have a very large family of sparrows living in their gutter. The parents dive down from the roof, catch worms and beetles, and then swoop back up to their babies, who respond in a mad chorus of ecstatic cheeping. &nbsp;Mittens and Mr. Bingley are absolutely enthralled!

Today is also very exciting because my music video for The Bedroom Door, which my sister Kaitlin shot and produced, has been reviewed in The Houston Press. You can watch the video and read the review <a target="_new" href="http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2012/03/jennifer_grassman_the_doors_th.php">here.

The Haunting will be releasing soon. Kaitlin (who is a film student) has been swamped with school, and apparently one of our ghosts has been being rather a pickle.

Also in the works, I'll be working alongside my friends and colleagues over at <a target="_new" href="http://laughlinphoto.com/">Laughlin Photography later this month to capture photos for my upcoming album, Once Upon A Time. We still haven't settled on a release date for the album, but things are moving along quite nicely!

In Baby News, I've been horrifically ill with morning sickness (hence the scanty website updates!). But thankfully, I've almost reached Week 15, around which point all that nastiness is supposed to subside, so cross your fingers for me. On April 5 we're scheduled for an ultrasound to determine whether the baby is a boy or a girl. I am so excited! Will keep you posted (o:

Have a lovely weekend,

Jennifer

Shooting Berries

I'm just back from a brief shooting expedition. I journeyed forth from my home to a nearby pond in order that I might take photos of some interesting red berries I&rsquo;d seen a few days before. However, when I arrived, I saw that I'd been preceded by another amateur photographer who seemed determined to document the life and times of a rain water drainage pipe. This just goes to prove that no matter who or where you are, you&rsquo;re never the nerdiest or the weirdest person around.

Thoughts on God, Flowers, & Sherlock Holmes

Every time I see the blue Morning Glory blossoms that cover my backyard in early day this time of year, I marvel that God invests so much beauty, care, and detail into something so tiny and which will only exist for a couple hours.

It reminds me how important it is to take time over the little things, and invest love in things that I'm naturally prone to take for granted. After all, it's the little things that make life worth living.

As Sherlock Holmes once said, &quot;Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.&quot;

Our 2nd Honeymoon in Northern CA: Redwoods, Lost Coast, George Harrison's House, & San Francisco!

To celebrate our 5th Wedding Anniversary, Jason and I hopped on a plane and visited northern California. We stayed in this little vintage town called <a target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferndale,_California">Ferndale, where a number of blockbuster films &ndash; including <a target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Majestic_(film)">The Majestic starring Jim Carey &ndash; were shot.

(RIGHT: Jason next to the ticket booth where Jim Carrey visited The Majestic Theater.)

Ferndale is absolutely beautiful. When I say it&rsquo;s a &ldquo;vintage&rdquo; town, we&rsquo;re talking late 1800&rsquo;s. There are rows of little Victorian style homes with elaborate trim, spires, multiple chimneys, and a whole array of colors. In short, one rather feels like one has stepped out of The US of A and dropped into an idealistic European fairytale town.
First we stayed at <a target="_new" href="http://www.victorianvillageinn.com/index.htm">The Victorian Inn, which, besides Hotel Ivanhoe, is the only hotel in the town. Our room was decorated with antiques, hand crocheted doilies, and Victorian era decor and photos. The adjacent eatery, <a target="_new" href="http://virestaurant.com/">VI Restaurant&nbsp;(where I performed an impromptu concert), serves the most amazing pizza on Tuesdays, and sundry other sublime delectable every other day of the week.
Next we stayed at <a target="_new" href="http://www.shawhouse.com/">Shaw House, which is a quaint little B&amp;B set in the founder of Ferndale&rsquo;s original home. The owners, Paula and her tom-kitty Teddy, were excellent hosts. Our bedroom opened up onto a second story balcony decked with vines and tree boughs. Every morning we woke up to the smell of the sea, the sound of songbirds, and fresh pastries and tea in the ornate dining room downstairs.
And when I say &ldquo;ornate&rdquo; I mean ORNATE! Here are some photos of the house and surrounding gardens:

We also hiked through <a target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humboldt_Redwoods_State_Park">The Redwood Forest, along <a target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_lost_coast">The Lost Coast, and took a gander at an lovely local beach not five minutes from Ferndale.

Above: A local beach near The Lost Coast. It was nippy &amp; windy!

That tiny person is me ... and that giant tree is likely hundreds, if not thousands of years old.

Jason peering through a hollow trunk.

We also met up with my Aunt Linda and her boyfriend Steve, who took us on a tour of San Francisco. We got to see <a target="_new" href="http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org/">The Botanical Gardens, we ate at hole-in-the-wall restaurants (including Burmese, Russian, and Italian), saw The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Robin William&rsquo;s house, John Lennon&rsquo;s house, and <a target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painted_ladies">The Painted Ladies.

The Golden Gate Bridge stands like a ghost in the fog that so often sweeps into the bay.

My Aunt Linda, Cricket and I at The Botanical Gardens.

Jason at The Botanical Gardens.

I&rsquo;ve got to say, San Francisco seems like an artist&rsquo;s dream-city. Nearly every building is an architectural work of ark, there&rsquo;s live music everywhere (even impromptu performances in the parks and along the streets), and enough galleries, museums, studios, and festivals to keep one busy for a lifetime.

The Painted Ladies. See the little vintage white bug? That's my Aunt Linda's car!

George Harrison's house ... or one of them anyway. The gate was really unusual!

Jason, Aunt Linda and Cricket at The Botanical Gardens.

Me and Jason at a little diner in Ferndale, California.

We stayed in this little vintage town called Ferndale, where a number of blockbuster films – including The Majestic starring Jim Carey – were shot.

(RIGHT: Jason next to the ticket booth where Jim Carrey visited The Majestic Theater.)

Ferndale is absolutely beautiful. When I say it’s a “vintage” town, we’re talking late 1800’s. There are rows of little Victorian style homes with elaborate trim, spires, multiple chimneys, and a whole array of colors. In short, one rather feels like one has stepped out of The US of A and dropped into an idealistic European fairytale town.

First we stayed at The Victorian Inn, which, besides Hotel Ivanhoe, is the only hotel in the town. Our room was decorated with antiques, hand crocheted doilies, and Victorian era decor and photos. The adjacent eatery, VI Restaurant (where I performed an impromptu concert), serves the most amazing pizza on Tuesdays, and sundry other sublime delectable every other day of the week.

Next we stayed at Shaw House, which is a quaint little B&B set in the founder of Ferndale’s original home.

And when I say “ornate” I mean ORNATE! Here are some photos of the house and surrounding gardens:

We also hiked through The Redwood Forest, along The Lost Coast, and took a gander at an lovely local beach not five minutes from Ferndale.

We also met up with my Aunt Linda and her boyfriend Steve, who took us on a tour of San Francisco. We got to see The Botanical Gardens, we ate at hole-in-the-wall restaurants (including Burmese, Russian, and Italian), saw The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Robin William’s house, John Lennon’s house, and The Painted Ladies.

The Golden Gate Bridge stands like a ghost in the fog that so often sweeps into the bay.

I’ve got to say, San Francisco seems like an artist’s dream-city. Nearly every building is an architectural work of ark, there’s live music everywhere (even impromptu performances in the parks and along the streets), and enough galleries, museums, studios, and festivals to keep one busy for a lifetime.

The Painted Ladies. See the little vintage white bug? That's my Aunt Linda's car!

George Harrison's house ... or one of them anyway. The gate was really unusual!

That's a Wrap!! All About The Haunting Music Video Shoots

Disclaimer: As I write this, it is Saturday, at 12:40 PM.&nbsp; I woke up about half an hour ago after our VERY big Prohibition shoot Friday night.&nbsp; So &hellip; This may not sound as coherent as my average blog! LOL!

Last Sunday we had our first rehearsal.&nbsp; My sister Kaitlin Grassman (of <a target="_new" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Penny-Electric-Studios/119477474775986">Penny Electric Studios who is producing the video) and Elisa Haaland taught everyone 1920&rsquo;s &ndash; 40&rsquo;s dance moves, including The Charleston.&nbsp;
Tuesday we shot the &ldquo;Wood Fairy&rdquo; scene in the woods behind <a href="http://www.SpringCypressChurch.com">Spring Cypress Church in Spring, Texas.&nbsp; We got all our beautiful little girls decked out in flowy white dresses (except one girl who was wearing in a lovely slate bubble dress to match another dress I wear in another scene).&nbsp; They danced in the woods with me as the sun went down through the trees.&nbsp; It was QUITE magical. Very haunting (o:
Wednesday we had another rehearsal.&nbsp; We had all our rehearsals over at <a target="_new" href="http://newspringfitness.com/">Spring Fitness Gym off FM 2920, who sponsored the video by letting us use their beautiful big aerobics room for dance practice.&nbsp; Their support was invaluable! I have no idea how we&rsquo;d have gotten all those dance moves down (or had so much fun) without that mighty big room, great floor, and wall to wall mirrors. It was awesome!
Thursday we shot The Jazz Band.&nbsp; Jonathan Castillo did an uncannily realistic performance on a plywood saxophone, and a hysterical performance on a fake drum set (which was in fact a painted cardboard box).&nbsp; Jason played a GIANT bass guitar &hellip; the thing must be 7 feet tall &hellip; and he was a total nut! You&rsquo;ll die laughing when you see it!&nbsp; Homer Martinez and Raul Aguilar were our horn duo.&nbsp; And before you ask &hellip; no, there are no horns in The Haunting. However, visually it just made sense somehow, and it&rsquo;s going to look absolutely perfect. Homer and Raul did an amazing job!&nbsp; It was too much fun (o:
And Friday &hellip; Friday was the BIG shoot and we had A BLAST!!!&nbsp; I&rsquo;m totally exhausted. Vintage dancing is quite demanding!&nbsp; LOL.&nbsp; I&rsquo;d like to especially thank Kelly Harwick of <a target="_new" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Vamp-Vintage-Wear/157557894278944">Vamp Vintage Wear for sponsoring us by doing makeup and hair and bringing some to-die-for costumes (including Jason&rsquo;s amazing shoes!).&nbsp; Ms. Hardwick did a fabulous job, and was extremely professional.&nbsp; I felt like such a diva!&nbsp; I&rsquo;d also like to thank Darla Guyton of <a target="_new" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Guyton-Photography/106581412695551">Guyton Photography who sponsored us by capturing some incredible behind-the-scenes photos and even &hellip; <a target="_new" href="http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2183066452482&amp;oid=106581412695551">a video clip!!&nbsp; Enjoy:

The Prohibited Mule

Last night (from 10PM to 12AM) was my debut gig at Prohibition, a new 1930&rsquo;s inspired cocktail lounge and piano bar in The Galleria Mall next to Saks Fifth Avenue.&nbsp; It went great!&nbsp; Everyone was so friendly and appreciative of the music.&nbsp; I really feel it&rsquo;s a great place to showcase my songs.&nbsp; I was actually getting requests for my own original material!!!&nbsp; I just felt that everyone there &ndash; the whole environment of the place &ndash; was really cultured and appreciative of the arts.

RIGHT: Prohibition bartender, Justin.

So no.&nbsp; It&rsquo;s not your average bar where strange men who&rsquo;ve had about 8 too many Bud Lights request Black Sabbath songs and then challenge your husband to a duel so they can take you home with them (yes &hellip; that actually happened to me once in a hotel bar &hellip; LOL ... thankfully Jason wasn't actually there and the guy's wife intervened and made him leave me alone!).&nbsp;

But seriously. &nbsp;Prohibition is very classy, relaxing, elegant, and artsy.&nbsp; Everyone there was really kind, considerate, and truly enjoying the vintage ambiance and flavorful artistry of the drinks. &nbsp; It was such a cool experience being there, and performing.
And I have to tell you:&nbsp; You&rsquo;ve never had a cocktail until you&rsquo;ve had one at Prohibition!
They use all organic fruit, fresh squeeze their own juices, and hand-make all their own flavorings.&nbsp; There are no prefab syrups, or drink concoctions you&rsquo;d be able to duplicate yourself at home.&nbsp; Each drink is quite literally a work of art with a very involved recipe (and history) behind it.&nbsp;

A few of the fruits and herbs I was able to identify at the bar were mint, rosemary, thyme, bananas, tomatoes, cherries, pears, pineapple, pomegranate, and various citrus. There were also a number of mysterious edibles that looked quite exotic. &nbsp; And of course, CHOCOLATE!!!
The cocktail I got to try was the &ldquo;Prohibited Mule.&rdquo; &nbsp;I only had the one, since it&rsquo;s rather hard to sing and play piano on too many cocktails (o:&nbsp; The Prohibited Mule has a zesty white wine zip, with a light pear flavor, and something rather fresh and herbal about it.&nbsp; Instead of leaving me feeling like I&rsquo;d been baked (like other place's cocktails have), I actually felt refreshed after drinking it.&nbsp; And there was a cherry tomato perched on the edge of the glass!&nbsp; It was shockingly delicious.
Everything in Prohibition, from the drinks to the d&eacute;cor, is inspired by 1930&rsquo;s era speakeasies, fashion, art, and culture.&nbsp; With a modern twist!&nbsp; There&rsquo;s art deco paintings, 1920&rsquo;s &ndash; 40&rsquo;s photography lining the walls, Steampunk lamps, really unusual and vintage looking furniture, and gorgeous wood floors that give the place absolutely stunning acoustics (perfect for live music!).
Anyway, I shall be playing at Prohibition again very soon.&nbsp; Keep an eye out on the &ldquo;Tour&rdquo; page for gig dates, and subscribe to my email list for monthly updates.&nbsp; I&rsquo;ll be making a BIG announcement soon (o:
Love,

RIGHT: Prohibition bartender, Justin.

So no. It’s not your average bar where strange men who’ve had about 8 too many Bud Lights request Black Sabbath songs and then challenge your husband to a duel so they can take you home with them (yes … that actually happened to me once in a hotel bar … LOL ... thankfully Jason wasn't actually there and the guy's wife intervened and made him leave me alone!).

But seriously. Prohibition is very classy, relaxing, elegant, and artsy. Everyone there was really kind, considerate, and truly enjoying the vintage ambiance and flavorful artistry of the drinks. It was such a cool experience being there, and performing.

And I have to tell you: You’ve never had a cocktail until you’ve had one at Prohibition!

They use all organic fruit, fresh squeeze their own juices, and hand-make all their own flavorings. There are no prefab syrups, or drink concoctions you’d be able to duplicate yourself at home. Each drink is quite literally a work of art with a very involved recipe (and history) behind it.

A few of the fruits and herbs I was able to identify at the bar were mint, rosemary, thyme, bananas, tomatoes, cherries, pears, pineapple, pomegranate, and various citrus. There were also a number of mysterious edibles that looked quite exotic. And of course, CHOCOLATE!!!

The cocktail I got to try was the “Prohibited Mule.” I only had the one, since it’s rather hard to sing and play piano on too many cocktails (o: The Prohibited Mule has a zesty white wine zip, with a light pear flavor, and something rather fresh and herbal about it. Instead of leaving me feeling like I’d been baked (like other place's cocktails have), I actually felt refreshed after drinking it. And there was a cherry tomato perched on the edge of the glass! It was shockingly delicious.

Everything in Prohibition, from the drinks to the décor, is inspired by 1930’s era speakeasies, fashion, art, and culture. With a modern twist! There’s art deco paintings, 1920’s – 40’s photography lining the walls, Steampunk lamps, really unusual and vintage looking furniture, and gorgeous wood floors that give the place absolutely stunning acoustics (perfect for live music!).

Anyway, I shall be playing at Prohibition again very soon. Keep an eye out on the “Tour” page for gig dates, and subscribe to my email list for monthly updates. I’ll be making a BIG announcement soon (o:

Prohibition: A 1930's Era Speak Easy & Piano Bar Opening Right Here in Houston!

Yesterday, I had an audition!

In the afternoon, I drove to the new Prohibition Bar, located in The Galleria, which is a brand new luxury bar modeled after a 1930&rsquo;s speak easy.&nbsp; They have a beautiful Kawai grand piano, prohibition era photography, vintage decor, and approximately 36 exotic cocktails, many of which sound like something a posh Agatha Christie character might have enjoyed.

As you probably already know, the 1930's is my favorite era ... I love the fashion, the culture, and I find the history to be facinating. &nbsp;I usually dress 1930's style for my concerts anyway, but for this audition, I made a particular effort (mostly with the hairstyle ... Women in the 1930's had exceptional updos! ... This style was really hard to finagle, but I think it came off 1930's-esk ...).

&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The audition went great (I played As Time Goes By, The Haunting, Avuncular, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and The Mad Mad March Hare Acoustic Exposition).
Thursday, July 7, 10PM, will be my debut performance!&nbsp; I&rsquo;ll be the chanteuse behind the grand piano while you enjoy Prohibition&rsquo;s vast selection of vintage styled &ldquo;cocktails with a modern twist, made with the freshest organic ingredients and top shelf liquors created by a renowned mixologist, Nick Tether from London,&rdquo; and artistic 1930&rsquo;s atmosphere.

Saving Strays in The Dog Days of Summer - SMART Rescue Update

I just received the below email from my friend Cindy Giacona over at SMART Animal Rescue - a really wonderful non-profit organization here in Texas. My kitties, Mittens and Mr. Bingley, are both rescued stays, so I have a soft spot in my heart for all abused, neglected, and abandoned animals - especially in this brutal summer heat!

The sweet dog to the right was rescued by SMART after some monster shot him with a rifle, breaking his leg. How could someone do such a thing?! Thankfully, SMART saved him, nursed him back to health, and he now has a wonderful home.

Many stray animals would make great pets and best friends (Mittens &amp; Bingley are living proof!), but if not rescued and cared for, will die painfully and needlessly in this summer heat. Please read below and consider reblogging, posting on Facebook, Tweeting on Twitter, and donating funds to this vital cause.

Good Morning All,

The Woodlands Air Conditioning &amp; Heating is sponsoring &quot; The Dog Days of Summer&quot; Campaign with the goal of raising $7,500 for SMART Rescue animals. They have made an initial donation of $2,500 and will match up to $2,500 of contributions from new and existing customers. The Campaign will run through September 21. Please click on the link below for more information . Additionally, they are holding a Facebook friend raffle this afternoon. If you go to their page and click &quot;Like&quot; before 2:00pm today, you may win a $75 gift certificate from La Trattoria Tuscano.

<a target="_new" href="http://thewoodlandsac.com/charity/">http://TheWoodlandsac.com/charity/

The Woodlands A/C &amp; Heating is being very generous in this offer to help our animals and I hope you will keep them in mind for any a/c and heating needs you may have. I was getting ready to have my a/c unit serviced for the summer and I am planning on using Woodlands A/C now. This is really a great group of people so please help spread the word so we can make this a successful campaign for both The Woodlands A/C &amp; Heating and SMART's animals.

Have a safe and Happy 4th of July!

Cindy

Hermine came to us in November with her brother Harry Potter. With each of them came a Christmas stocking embroidered with their name . It wasn't much of an exciting Christmas for them because their owner passed away unexpectedly and they were suddenly homeless. Since then, Harry Potter has gone to his new home but Hermine is still waiting for the perfect family to find her. Hermine is gentle, kind and very loving. Her tail is unusual; it curls over her back, especially when she is happy. Hermine will probably do well with children and other pets since she is very calm and adaptive. She is a very sweet girl and has lots of love to share. Maybe this Christmas will be her best ever!!! &nbsp;<a target="_new" href="http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/19940366">Visit Hermione's Profile

PS: If you know you've got stray cats / dogs wandering around in your neighborhood, consider leaving a bowl of water and even some food out for them every morning. &nbsp; In this heat, many of the natural water sources are drying up, it's too hot to scavenge, and domestic animals don't have the instincts of wild animals to hunt and locate water. &nbsp; If you're worried about fire ants getting into the dog/cat food, put a ring of dish soap around the bowl, or set the bowl in the middle of a pie dish or other shallow dish filled with water. &nbsp; This will create a moat that the fire ants can't cross.

You Know it's Summer in Texas When...

Your CD cases melt to the seat of your car and the pens in your dash explode.

RIGHT: My Streams of Passion CD case melted in my car last week.

You light your scented candle and the first aroma that hits you is the smell of burning pet hair.&nbsp; Yep. They&rsquo;re shedding that seriously. And it&rsquo;s everywhere. Even in your candles.

You&rsquo;re washing your hands and mistakenly think you&rsquo;ve turned on the hot tap &hellip; but no &hellip; that&rsquo;s the cold tap.&nbsp; In fact, the water in your pipes is so warm, that you can&rsquo;t leave the toilet lid down, or it will start raining inside the bowl and get water all over the seat and floor.

Not even birds will hop on the asphalt &hellip; which is gummy &hellip; because the tar is liquefying in the heat.

Your potted cactus shrivels and dies.

You see mirages of large pools of water in the street after being outside for less than 5 minutes.

You suddenly develop and affinity for cold coffee in the morning.

You get in the habit of going outside and opening all the car doors 10 minutes before you drive anywhere.

The digital billboards along the freeway scroll the words &ldquo;Extreme Wild Fire Hazard&rdquo; and the local news anchors keep nagging you to drink more and more water.

The cow pond across the street looks like a dry gorge.

The kids down the street play &ldquo;Sprinkler Basket Ball&rdquo; in their driveway. Directions: 1) Put on your bathing suit, 2) Set up your hoop, 3) Turn on the sprinkler, 4) Enjoy!

Brightbox, Massive CIA, and Muscular Atrophy

The last two weeks have been such a whirlwind.&nbsp; First, I started two part time jobs (yay!).&nbsp; One is writing for a brand marketing and graphic design company here in Houston called <a href="http://www.brightboxonline.com/">Brightbox.&nbsp; The other is as the publicist (more writing!), social media director, and regional A&amp;R representative for <a target="_new" href="http://www.massivecia.com">Massive CIA (Massive Creative Intelligence Agency), which is an artist and trend discovery firm based in Los Angeles. Both jobs are super fun and exciting (and they&rsquo;re funding <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">Once Upon A Time!), but of course, as with any new job, there is a bit of a learning-curve, so I apologize that I&rsquo;ve been so long about blogging or posting new videos. My brain has been elsewhere.
Amidst all this newness, I&rsquo;ve also been having some aberrant health issues.&nbsp; I&rsquo;ve been experiencing pain in my joints (knees, angles, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists &hellip;).&nbsp; This has been going on for &hellip; well, since late last year &hellip; but recently it&rsquo;s gotten much worse.&nbsp; I was originally assuming it was from a new exercise routine, but as time went on, and the pain got more severe, it began waking me up 3-5 times at night and keeping me from doing normal life activities which I used to be able to do in a snap.&nbsp; I&rsquo;m scared to squat down too far, or walk up or down stairs, because my knees literally feel like they&rsquo;re going to pop and give out.
In addition, I&rsquo;ve developed this weird dip in my right thigh muscle.&nbsp; I first noticed it a couple months ago just by feeling it with my hand.&nbsp; Now it&rsquo;s much bigger &hellip; about 3 cm deep and the size of my fist.
So, I went to the doctor.&nbsp; It turns out that the dip in my thigh is due to muscular atrophy (muscles shrinking due to lack of use), which (considering the fact that I&rsquo;m a very active 26 year old) is most likely due to some kind of nerve damage.&nbsp; The nerve damage could be caused by an injury (like that concussion I got by banging my head on a hotel lamp during my Florida tour late last year), or it could be an early-onset symptom of an <a target="_new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-immune_disorder">auto-immune disorder, like Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Multiple Sclerosis (MS),etc..
Of course, nobody likes to consider the possibility that they may have a debilitating illness for the rest of their lives.&nbsp; I&rsquo;m hoping I&rsquo;ve still got a good 50+ years on me, so the idea of spending half a century taking expensive medical treatments and being physically constrained by disease, does NOT sound appealing.
Some people have tried to comfort me by saying, &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t worry! Auto-immune disorders are very manageable and will hardly affect your lifestyle at all.&rdquo;&nbsp; Thanks, but &hellip; well ...&nbsp; My mom has RA, and sometimes her episodes are so painful she can&rsquo;t move or barely breath.&nbsp; My friend Aimee has MS, and I&rsquo;ve seen how scary and painful her suffering has been.&nbsp; So, I don&rsquo;t think auto-immune disorders are a piece of cake.&nbsp; They are, in fact, quite horrid and potentially debilitating.&nbsp; I sincerely pity anyone who has one, and I am terrified by the thought that I might have early onset symptoms.
The doctor ran tons of lab tests (they took an outlandish quantity of blood &hellip; Thankfully the nurse at Herman Memorial Hospital was the best EVER though. I barely felt a prick, and she gave me cheese, crackers, and apple juice to ward off the woozies), and they took about 10 x-rays of my joints.&nbsp; I&rsquo;m going back on Monday to find out my results.&nbsp; Hopefully, it&rsquo;s just nerve damage from that stupid Floridian lamp.
Your thoughts, prayers, and hopes are extremely appreciated.&nbsp; I can&rsquo;t help feeling anxious and discouraged.&nbsp; I&rsquo;ve had so many nice phone calls, emails, and comments on Facebook.&nbsp; I&rsquo;ll update you ASAP whenever I know anything conclusive.
Thanks again for all your love and support.
Jennifer

The Little Sparrow That Fell

It was Friday morning when I saw him; a tiny baby sparrow who had fallen from his nest. The breeze blew his downy feathers and made his delicate body tremble as he huddled beneath the oak tree in our front yard. On his tiny, wrinkled eyelids, there were extravagant black eyelashes. His little legs, as thin as toothpicks, were stretched out beside him. He was already dead.

He didn&rsquo;t seem to have been killed by a cat or another bird. He was perfect. He must have tried to fly before he was ready, and fallen.

His family has a lively nest in our neighbor&rsquo;s gutter. Even now they were chirping and flitting about as if nothing was amiss.

Several hours later, I went back outside and happened to look where the little bird lay. Ants were swarming over his body; already most of him was gone. It was a grim sight! Nature&rsquo;s miniature undertakers are quite efficient. Other sparrows &ndash; among them, I&rsquo;m sure, the little bird&rsquo;s parents &ndash; darted from tree to tree and sung cheerful songs as the more morbid offices of Mother Nature were carried out below.

The next morning I went outside again. The little sparrow was gone. Not a feather. Not even a bone. If I had not seen him, no one would have ever known he&rsquo;d been there.

In the next lawn, his brothers and sisters were practicing taking off and landing rather awkwardly in the grass. Full of life and energy, the tiny family seemed to have completely forgotten their loss &ndash; if they ever registered it at all.

And then I remembered this verse:

&ldquo;Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father&rsquo;s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don&rsquo;t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.&rdquo;

And I was struck with a very unusual idea.

I had not been present when this baby sparrow fell and died. I was doubtful his parents had even hopped down from their perches to see if he was alright or to say goodbye. If one didn&rsquo;t know, one would think the little guy had been entirely alone when he breathed his last small breath and closed his tiny wrinkled eyelids with their long black lashes.

But God was there; He saw all, and cared deeply.

I&rsquo;ve often wondered whether animals are aware of God, and I have come to believe that they are.

When our dog Whitney had leukemia, she knew she was going to die. She would not eat or drink or play. She simply found a comfortable spot in the shade of our backyard and rested; waiting for the end &hellip; or was it the end? Whatever it was, she understood it, and she was ready.

She was patient with us; calmly enduring our attempts to comfort her in the knowledge that we loved her. But there was this look in her big, brown, dog eyes; a look of sleepy wisdom I had never seen there before. She knew, and she was not afraid.

I encountered this phenomenon again about a year ago when I saw a magnificent buck who had been hit by a car. Evidentially, he had been injured, realized that he was about to die, and had lain down to wait peacefully for the inevitable.

He was positioned so perfectly, there by the side of the road. Though I couldn&rsquo;t see any injuries, his body was somehow a mere shell of what he&rsquo;d been when he was alive. There was no spirit left; the soul that had enlivened those huge obsidian eyes had gone somewhere else far away.

His legs were tucked under him as if he were resting. His eyes were peaceful and they lacked any fear. I realized suddenly that I&rsquo;d never seen a deer&rsquo;s eyes when it wasn&rsquo;t afraid; when the thought of dashing back into the trees wasn&rsquo;t racing through its mind. I felt then as if I were seeing a deer for the first time &ndash; the way another forest animal might &ndash; at peace, unafraid, content.

I hope that someday, when my time comes, I will be able to confront death with the wisdom of a dog, the confidence of a deer, and the courage of a baby bird.

Perhaps they see something that we do not. Perhaps there are angels all around us. Perhaps they hear God&rsquo;s voice in the breeze, comforting them and calling them home.
Whatever it is, they find absolute peace in a time when humans so often cannot.

&ldquo;So don&rsquo;t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in Heaven..&rdquo;

Matthew 10:31 &amp; 32

Happy Mother's Day!

I think the job of being a Mother is one of the most important jobs in the whole world. Police officers can protect you from crime. Firemen can save you from burning buildings. Doctors can heal you from disease and injury &hellip; But a Mother guards and nurtures your heart from infancy, through the most vulnerable years of your life.

She devotes her soul to bolstering yours.

It is said that, &ldquo;Behind every great man, there is a great woman.&rdquo; Most people interpret that to mean a great wife, but I think it&rsquo;s talking about Mothers.

My Mom has influenced me for good my entire life. She home schooled me from the 1st grade through Senior High. She taught me to read and to sing and to love books and art. She got me started on piano lessons when I was seven years old, and made me practice as a teenybopper even when I had an attitude and didn&rsquo;t want to.

She taught me about God and how to be a kind person. She has lived by example for as long as I can remember &ndash; always putting everyone else way before herself.

Through many difficult struggles &ndash; from being a single mom, to being diagnosed with a painful auto-immune disease just a few years ago &ndash; my Mom has continually proven to be the strongest person I know. Even her mistakes are made in the deepest love and with the best intentions!

She forgives me before I get around to saying I&rsquo;m sorry. She has an uncanny knack for sensing when I&rsquo;m having a bad day, and never fails to call me on the phone. She brags about me to all her friends as if I&rsquo;m not there. She is the Mom I dream about being when I have kids someday.

Every good thing that I am &ndash; or that I ever will be &ndash; is a tribute to God, because he gave me a great Mother.

I love you Mom!

Much Love &amp; All My Best to All the Mommies Out There this Mother&rsquo;s Day!

Piano Recording DONE (!!!) for Once Upon A Time!

Tuesday and Wednesday (yesterday in fact) we were busy as bumblebees recording piano tracks for my new album, Once Upon A Time. I am EXHAUSTED!!! In fact, I went to sleep around 10PM last night and did not wake up again until 12PM this afternoon. My back hurts, my eyes ache, and my fingers feel like they just ran a marathon!

Tuesday we got a late start because Mike Thompson (my producer) had a piece of very important equipment go up in smoke &ndash; literally! It was a $3500, blue, rectangular thingamajig. Thankfully, Mike happens to be very handy with a soldering gun. He went to ACE Hardware, got some sort of little fuse or circuit or tube contraption (it looked like a fat battery), soldered that sucker in there, and &ndash; Oorah! &ndash; we were back in business.

We recorded from about 4PM to 7PM on Tuesday and from about 10AM to 5PM on Wednesday. We hardly took any breaks except to eat lunch or refill our tea cups.

Here are some photos of the set up. Jason (husband and photographer) wasn&rsquo;t available to take photos on Wednesday so there aren&rsquo;t any of ME &hellip; and for some reason I didn&rsquo;t take any of Mike (weird) &hellip; but I got some nice shots of the cats (surprise, surprise!).

On Tuesday Jason DID get some GREAT video footage though. I&rsquo;m editing it now and will post it on <a target="_new" href="http://www.YouTube.com/JenniferGrassman">YouTube soon (o:

FAQ:

1) We closed a sheet into the piano bench to keep it from squeaking when I moved.

2) If you listen to the piano tracks and turn them up REALLY loud, you can hear our neighbors (a small but very active family of sparrows) singing.
